Review
"RPG has been a mainstay on IBM i for many decades. With IBM i now supporting many open source languages, there will be a new cross-section of developers being exposed to the machine, and we need to teach them the latest features of RPG for fruitful coexistence. That's where this book shines. Jim and Bryan have expertly put together a book to meet the needs of one learning modern RPG, complete with 100% free-form and modular coding practices (e.g., service programs), . . . how to use the latest tools like RDi, . . . and commentary on best practices, so readers can make decisions based on sage advice." —Aaron Bartell, Director of IBM i Innovation, Krengel Technology"We have been using the earlier versions of this book as part of our 'Introduction to RPG IV' classes for many years now. This latest version includes the modern free-format declarations and other recent language enhancements as well as covering essentials such as building and using Service Programs. It is an essential guide to the language as well as being a great reference document as students progress in their use of the language. Our only criticism is that this version renders our existing inventory obsolete! Highly recommended." —Jon Paris and Susan Gantner, Partner400 owners and IBM i educators

This is the perfect textbook for anyone learning the modern techniques of ILE RPG programming. Specifically, if you've struggled with how to modernize legacy code, this resource will connect the dots for you. It teaches the most advanced and up-to-date features of ILE RPG, so you're getting the latest information. But it also has a short section at the end of each chapter that shows how the same or similar concept was handled in legacy code in case you should ever encounter it. For someone who has maintained legacy code for most of my career, this feature alone was so helpful in teaching me how to discard the old style programming in favor of the new modular style. I highly recommend it!
This is probably the only book that you will need to master the art of ILE RPG programming, until the next major version upgrade, of course. If you are a gray-haired veteran of the golden years of System 3X, you can probably skip the first three chapters, which are primarily history and review. If you started your IBM Midrange career after 1988, the dawn of the AS/400, read the entire manual. The authors provide a useful, nicely arranged mix of new coding techniques and keywords along with a description of the legacy code that was replaced. They also include many real world examples of common business problems and efficient solutions. This book will prove itself to be worth far more than the price you paid for it.
The book was in great condition upon arrival. It really helps with my RPG class! It would also be a great reference book, if you wanted to teach yourself about the newest RPG version.
Very simple, clear, all the most important topics. Great book suitable for beginners and not.
The book is written on glossy paper making it one of the heavyist books that I've seen in a long time. I
Not a good book if you are starting out with RPG. I had to get this book for a college course and I ended up browsing the web and using YouTube instead of the book.
There's simply not enough information or sample code! The book is VERY similar to the student handbook. It feels the same, a student handbook. There's no hello world or anything. Nothing. Also the sample data for public download has objects owned by QUSER. So if you're starting out, you can't actually restore the objects using a cloud AS400 service. Sad.
