Review of Digital Fundamentals (Custom Edition) by Thomas L Floyd:This book is a gem on digital logic and practical implementation.I think there are three camps to whom this subject is traditionally taught: pure computer scientists, computer/electrical engineers and technicians. The former group (in my experience) focuses on abstraction and does not cover the actual digital circuits implementation in depth. The CE/EEs usually cover enough of the useful theory along with the practical implementation - because at the end of the day they are expected to actually build something physical. This naturally extends to electronic technicians for whom this book is written but don't need the higher-level abstractness (don't let that dissuade you if you are an engineer - the explanations and diagrams are much better than several commonly used EE books). This book is definitely for practical man (& woman) in the latter two camps.In the edition I have (8th) it summarizes practical CPLD programming using ABEL. The later editions use VHDL to program FPGAs but from the coverage I've seen in the 10th edition it doesn't seem to be much.I found it to be an excellent coverage of basic digital circuits: logic, combinational and sequential for those who have no idea of what that terminology means (maybe you?). The end of chapter design examples are wonderfully well written as is the text. The figures and diagrams are not only delightfully well done but super useful and intuitive. 10/10 would recommended to someone teaching themselves as a primary source.Note on which edition to purchase:This is a "custom edition" which is probably just the 8th edition in paperback because Pearson decided they couldn't lower the price on the hardback. I doubt much of the material has changed in the later editions as I made a comparison with the 10th hardback edition. In fact the only difference at glance seems to be one of the later chapters is entitled "Signal Interfacing and Processing" in the 10th edition and "Digital Signal Processing" in this "Custom" 8th edition for which my review refers.
ITS MISSING A CHAPTER FROM THE ORIGINAL EDITION ON CAPACITANCE. Its one chapter vs like 40 bucks more, which you can easily work your way around for a single chapter.... But its still annoying. So its basically a good book with stupid formulas. It cuts right to the chase when it comes to conceptual learning but it will rewrite formulas throughout the book to suit specific situations instead of just teaching you how to rewrite the original formula to suit your needs. An example would be calculating resistance for two resistors in parallel. You can do the all encompassing "inverse resistance, added together" (which can be any number of resistors) or "AB/A+B" (which is only relavent for two resistors). theyll always use their shortcut methods that don't help you on the test when there's three resistors and you only remember the formula for two -_- but you catch on quickly to their little game and if you write down base formulas when you first see them, life is so...so... Much better. I've taken 2 courses in AC and DC and its super helpful except the missing capacitance chapter. I never plan on letting this book go despite these little hiccups.
Great price worth it
Really breaks down what you need to know for understanding computer logic. This book has proven worthy in furthering my learning of microprocessors.

Generally a very good book. The content is well organized and explanations are very clear. However there are some important topics that are not covered, such as state machine (not in details), RTL design, and logic hazards.
